Guide to Using Competition in the PLTW Classroom

Competition can be a powerful way to motivate student achievement. This 8-10 page guide includes practical ideas and resources for planning and hosting a competition in the classroom using the existing projects and problems in the Gateway To Technology (GTT) curriculum.

Gateway To Technology (GTT) Quiz Bowl

Students demonstrate their understanding of the basic concepts in the GTT course through participation in a quiz bowl. The quiz bowl questions are designed to review the key concepts and essential questions from the Gateway to Technology curriculum.

Improve My School Presentation

Students demonstrate their understanding of the design and modeling process taught in the first unit of Gateway To Technology through participation in the "Improve My School Presentation" competition. This competition builds upon the playground design problem at the end of the design and modeling unit.

Systems Identification Challenge

Students demonstrate their understanding of mechanisms, technological systems and their application to robotics through this unique competition. There are three rounds involved in the competition. This particular event aligns best with the Automation and Robotics unit in Gateway To Technology.

Leadership Development Resources

Teachers Guide to Leadership Development in the GTT Classroom

This practical guide provides resources, best practices and ideas for enhancing student leadership development in the GTT classroom. In addition, teachers and students will have access to a specialized activity planning tool to use for planning and conducting activities in the GTT classroom.

Scenario eLearning Module

Students can complete these engaging eLearning modules to enhance their ability to participate effectively in PLTW course activities, projects and problems. In each module, students are immersed in a real-world scenario involving other students working on a realistic PLTW course project or problem. Students make decisions and receive feedback throughout the module. The module concludes with students completing a reflection worksheet and action plan. The module may be completed individually or as a whole class using the facilitator and participant's guides. Three modules will be available on the final Engineering Alliance portal.

Leadership Lesson Supplements

These lesson plan supplements provide a short 15-20 minute activity to enhance the existing GTT curriculum.

Engineering Awareness Activity Kit

This kit provides you all of the resources needed to engage GTT students in conducting an engineering awareness activity with students at a local elementary school. This project provides students with a way to serve other students in the local school, continue exploring applications of engineering and engineering technology and practice important life and leadership skills.
