Guide to Using Competition in the PLTW Classroom

Competition can be a powerful way to motivate student achievement. This 8-10 page guide  includes practical ideas and resources for planning and hosting a competition in the classroom using the existing projects and problems in the PLTW curriculum.

Virtual Quiz Bowl

Students demonstrate their understanding of the basic concepts in the PLTW Introduction to Engineering Design™ course through participation in a virtual quiz bowl. There are five rounds designed to review the key concepts and essential questions outlined in Units One through Four of IED.

Design Problem Solution Judging

Students demonstrate their understanding of the principles of engineering through this judging competition. Students are presented with a real-world design problem and four possible solutions to the problem; they must rank the possible solutions by applying their understanding of the Principles Of Engineering™ course content.

Community Problems Presentation

In this competition, students will identify a local design problem to solve by applying their understanding of the engineering design after completing the three PLTW foundation courses which include Introduction to Engineering Design™, Principles of Engineering™ and Digital Electronics™. Students must create and deliver a presentation to identify the design problem, expected constraints and a possible solution.

Leadership Development Resources

Teachers Guide to Leadership Development in the PLTW Classroom

This practical guide provides resources, best practices and ideas for enhancing student leadership development in the PLTW classroom. In addition, teachers and students will have access to a specialized activity planning tool to use for planning and conducting activities in the PLTW classroom.

Scenario eLearning Module

Students can complete these engaging eLearning modules to enhance their ability to participate effectively in PLTW course activities, projects and problems. In each module, students are immersed inh a real-world scenario involving other students working on a realistic PLTW course project or problem. Students make decisions and receive feedback throughout the module. The module concludes with students completing a reflection worksheet and action plan. The module may be completed individually or as a whole class using the facilitator and participant's guides.

Leadership Lesson Supplements

These lesson plan supplements provide a short 15-20 minute activity to enhance the existing Project Lead The Way curriculum.

Engineering Career Fair Activity Kit

This kit provides all of the resources needed to engage students in hosting an engineering career fair at the local level. This project provides students with a way to serve other students in the local school, connect with potential employers, spur interest in the PLTW program and practice important life and leadership skills.
